What is Bouldering?
Gallura is also a beloved region for boulderers and climbers, those spider-men capable of climbing where it seems (and indeed is) almost impossible! Gallura and bouldering are a fascinating combination, thanks to the terrain's seemingly tailor-made conformation, with granite blocks of various sizes and types rising within a breathtaking landscape.
Seeing is believing, or rather, for now… seeing is believing!
Bouldering is a form of rock climbing, ranging from 1 to 8/9 meters high, capable of enhancing the climber's strength, agility, and concentration. Bouldering's unique feature, which distinguishes it from traditional climbing, is the complete absence of ropes. The boulder is supported solely by crash pads, a type of mattress that cushions the impact of a fall.
You can do Bouldering in Gallura, from Tempio Pausania a Holy Place, but also along the coast, from tafoni of Capo Testa a Santa Teresa Gallura a The Magdalene, until Saint Theodore.
Where to go bouldering in Gallura
Tempio Pausania
The bouldering area is located in Li Frati (545 m), in the undergrowth of Mount Limbara, near a picnic area. It offers all the amenities for enjoyable and fun bouldering. In the parking lot, there's a fresh water fountain, called the Funtana di Li Frati.
Climbing areas
Take the Tempio Pausania-Oschiri road that leads to Monte Limbara and, at the intersection for the Industrial Area, turn left. After about 1 km, at a fountain, turn right onto the dirt road and follow the signs, following the Li Mulini road for 1.45 km. The parking lot is on the right, at the bend of a sharp curve, almost opposite a small road that enters the woods.
Holy Place
It is one of the most sought-after locations for climbers, and today it is also a stage for an important event that attracts enthusiasts from all over the world: the Rock&Walls Bouder Contest.
Climbing areas
The equipped area extends across Monte Giovanni, where numerous freed boulders are located. To pinpoint its exact location, this map highlights all sectors, routes, and trails, as well as their difficulty levels and GPS coordinates.
Maddalena Island
This is a favorite for the scenery surrounding the climbing area. The sport, already spectacular in itself, takes on an even more captivating quality due to the beauty of these places, with a rocky formation framed in a splendid landscape where nature has expressed its aesthetic potential at its best! The Maddalena Archipelago is among the lesser-known but undoubtedly most surprising destinations for bouldering.,
Climbing areas
Once disembarked, continue left and skirt the island along the coastal road. Leaving the town, head towards Punta Tegge, past it and continuing for another 300 meters until you reach a small pier dominated by boulders that are a climbing gym. The granite boulders here are perfect for climbing, thanks to the action of the sea and the salt air, which prevent moss from growing.
Massineo is one of the most beautiful and evocative areas on the island (it takes its name from Mattia Massineo, who discovered and set the route for this climb) and is located about 1 km after Marina Nido d'Aquila, towards the interior of the island. You'll reach a clearing on the left, also marked by a sign. The boulders begin about 200 meters ahead, near a large orange boulder. From there, continue a little further to the left and you'll reach the Massineo area, where there's over 100 meters of bouldering space!
On the island of Caprera, among other breathtaking scenery, there are other interesting areas. Continue across the bridge for a few hundred meters to a crossroads where you turn first right and then left; continue along the road until you reach your destination, near a pine forest.
Santa Teresa Gallura
For climbers, Santa Teresa Gallura is a true paradise. Sea erosion and wind have created an incredibly beautiful landscape here, with rocks that are the ideal training ground for free-hand climbing, set against a crystal-clear sea and, in the background, the island of Corsica.
Climbing areas
The area is unparalleled in its beauty and mystical allure throughout the Mediterranean, because Capo Testa is a cluster of granite rocks where you can climb and experience the unique thrill of the Valle della Luna (Moon Valley), so named after its historic inhabitants, those flower children now reduced to a mere handful. As for the technical aspect, the grades of the various routes range from 5c to 8a.
