visit La Maddalena
True pearl of the Mediterranean The Magdalene It is the older sister of about 60 islands and islets that make up the archipelago north-east of Sardinia, off the Gallura coast. It is the only inhabited island within the national park, with its historic town, a former Italian and American military base, which has always been an internationally popular tourist destination.
A road runs around its entire perimeter: 45 kilometers of breathtaking views. Granite and porphyry define jagged stretches, inlets, coves, and beaches, while the hinterland is made up of rolling hills. La Maddalena lends its name to the archipelago of which it is the largest island and to the national park of which it is the administrative center.
Its strategic position in the Mediterranean has influenced its history: in 1793 the French army led by a young Corsican officer, Napoleon Bonaparte, attempted to invade it, but was stopped by the fleet commanded by the Maddalenino. Domenico Millelire. The island attracted, among others, the attention of Admiral Nelson. Today it captures the holiday desires of lovers of natural scenery of extraordinary beauty.
the long presence of the Navy is witnessed by the Nino Lamboglia Naval Museum.
Its town center is the only one in the archipelago: La Maddalena, founded in 1770, overlooks Palau, a twenty-minute ferry ride away. The cobbled streets of the center are lined with eighteenth-century buildings, such as the town hall and the parish church of Santa Maria Maddalena. In the small harbor of Cala Gavetta a column with the effigy of is erected Joseph Garibaldi, who lived the last 26 years in Caprera, united to the Magdalene by Moneta Pass and famous for the Garibaldi Museum Compendium.
A visit to La Maddalena is an endless succession of enchanting views, in a suggestive landscape that enhances the transparency of a crystalline sea, combined with the greenery of a rich and pristine vegetation to create one of the most extraordinary places in the Mediterranean. Along the road of Spreader you reach the fjord of French Cove where, among Mediterranean scrub and granite quarries, paths lead to the discovery of quiet coves and dream beaches. In the southern part, following the seafront of Marshes, we arrive at the Eagle's Nest, near the military fortress. Not far away, the other wonder of Punta Tegge. To the north, beyond the Strangolato isthmus, there are coves made of white dunes and surrounded by rocks shaped by the wind and beaches: unmissable. Lower Trinity, Cala Lunga e Arena Mountains.
From La Maddalena you can set off to discover the other islands of the park: Saint Stephen south, casings and the famous Pink Beach, Razzoli, Saint Mary e Spread north.
Worth visiting is the small, charming village of Stagnali in Caprera, where the headquarters is located environmental education and research center on cetaceans and the mineralogical and marine museums, which exhibits minerals, fossils, sands, shells, flora and fauna.
Maddalena Archipelago Park
Established by Presidential Decree of 17/05/1996, the Park includes the entire territory of the municipality of La Maddalena, with all the islands of the archipelago and the surrounding sea.
The area's facilities and initiatives are located in the center of La Maddalena and in the Stagnali area of Caprera, where an environmental education center has been started.
Among the promotional initiatives is the national event "Vivere il Mare" (Living the Sea), which every year involves hundreds of Italian and foreign students in a competition to make films about the marine environment.
There are seven major islands in the protected area, more than 45 including islets and rocks.
The territory extends over all the emerged lands along the north-eastern coast of Sardinia up to the south of the small group of Mortorio, Soffi and The Chambers.
A trip to the Archipelago is an unforgettable experience! Many shipping companies depart from La Maddalena every day to discover this wonderful little world, ploughing the sea waters that here shimmer with a thousand colors and shades, offering sensations that alone make a holiday on this enchanting pearl of the Mediterranean worthwhile.
Giuseppe Garibaldi Memorial - Fort Arbuticci
Drawing on materials belonging to the hero of two worlds, historical documents from various collections, and extensive multimedia, the Memorial guides visitors through the entire life and work of Giuseppe Garibaldi, from his birth in Nice, to his political and naval education, to the years in which he fought for freedom in South America, and to his return to Italy to fight in the First War of Independence and in the defense of the Roman Republic.
Then came his long exile, which took him to Tangier, Africa, then to New York, where he worked in Meucci's candle factory, then to South America, Australia, and China. This "world tour" was of great importance for Garibaldi and for the development of his political ideas. Between 1854 and 1860, Garibaldi played a key role in the unification of Italy, with his return from London, his participation in the Second War of Independence, and the Expedition of the Thousand. It was the great epic of Italy and its hero, the realization of a unified and libertarian dream, but also the beginning of his decline. Extremely popular throughout Europe and the Americas, Garibaldi had become a true universal icon, but also a burdensome figure for the new Italian state.
The House-Museum complex
With the house where Garibaldi spent the last phase of his existence, the new Memorial will further characterise Caprera as Garibaldina Island, a living museum of the memories and history of one of the greatest personalities of 19th-century Italy and beyond.
The exhibition spaces
The Memorial is organized in different exhibition areas located in the rooms created during the restoration of Forte Arbuticci. These are four factory buildings The exhibitions are arranged chronologically, from Garibaldi's youth, a sailor from Nice fascinated by Mazzini's ideas, to his final years on Caprera. Visitors can follow Garibaldi throughout his life and his human, political, and military adventures, thanks to richly illustrated graphics, multimedia environments, audio and visual suggestions, and a rich selection of objects and documents.
Alongside the exhibition spaces, it is worth mentioning the other services available to visitors, according to the most innovative systems of contact with the public: from library and video library specialized, small screening room, at multimedia stations where it will be possible to consult original documents and autographs preserved in the most important Italian archives (like the complete manuscript of Garibaldi's Memoirs preserved in the Central State Archives of Rome), to the outdoor spaces that have been refurbished and can be set up for themed events. All of this makes up the offering of an innovative "“Garibaldi Laboratory”. The activation of further services is planned, in the various areas now recovered, with the upcoming establishment of a foundation to manage the Memorial.
