Balares – visit to the Nuraghe Majori

Nuraghe Majori is one of the most important nuraghes in Alta Gallura and Sardinia. It is located about three kilometers from the center of Tempio Pausania. Leave your car in the parking lot, from where a two-minute trail leads to the nuraghe's entrance. Here, immersed in the greenery of the Mediterranean scrub, at 498 meters above sea level, on a granite dome, in a strategic position overlooking the surrounding territory, begins your visit to one of the most important monuments in Alta Gallura and Sardinia.

The Nuraghe Majori

Sub-circular in plan, Nuraghe Majori is constructed from large and medium-sized granite blocks, roughly hewn and further worked near the entrance. The monument is defined as a mixed-type structure, as it features both corridor-type nuraghe and tholos-type nuraghes. The architraved entrance, surmounted by a small window, leads to a corridor that cuts lengthwise through the wall. The section behind the entrance is covered with tabular steps and the remaining section is ogival in section. To the right and left are architraved entrances that lead to ovoid-shaped rooms covered with false domes. The one on the left contains an ovoid-shaped chamber also covered with a false dome. Nature has then provided a perfect setting for this monument, with a lush forest of ash trees, holm oaks, alders, buckthorns, phillyrea, and cork oaks, and an undergrowth rich in butcher's broom, cyclamens, and small wild orchids that add color and enliven the gray granite of its boulders.
