Aggius: museums, churches, nuraghe, and places to see
In the historic center of the town, the predominant element is the granite exposed, present in the walls of buildings and in the paving of streets, alleys and small squares.
The toponyms have preserved ancient denominations: l'Aldia (guard post, toll house), Paràula, Speslunga, Lu Cunventu and Piazza di li Baddhi (Dance Square). Inside the town there are four churches: the parish church dedicated to Santa Vittoria, another dedicated to the Madonna d'Itria and the oratories of Santa Croce and del Rosario.
There Church of Santa Vittoria, according to documents found in the Episcopal Curia, was erected in 1536. Some parts have been renovated in more recent times, such as the main facade, rebuilt in 1856 and the bell tower, 33 metres high and built during the 20th century.
There Church of Our Lady of the Rosary and the Church of Santa Croce, seats of the homonymous brotherhoods, have inscriptions on the architraves positioned at the entrance, the first has the inscription ODRA 1727, while the second ODSC 1709, these would be datings relating to restorations.
There Church of Our Lady of Itria It dates back to the mid-18th century and was built by the Tirotto family as a thank you to the Madonna for the return of a family member who had fallen into the hands of the Saracens.
There are numerous churches in the surrounding area: Saint Petru (Saint Peter of Rudas), Santu Jagu (St. James), Saint Philip (Saint Philip), Santu Lusunu (Saint Lussorio), Our Lady of Peace located in the hamlet of Bonaita, where even today country festivals linked to the agricultural world, the protection of crops and work in the fields are held.
A short distance from the town centre, the Santa Degna lake, is a wild and enchantingly beautiful place, surrounded by rugged paths, cork oak forests and granite hills. The latter dominate the Valley of the Moon, or Piana dei Grandi Sassi, a fascinating place of profound silence. In the valley it is possible to visit one of the most impressive and best preserved Nuragic structures in all of Sardinia: the Nuraghe Izzana.
Don't miss the MEOC Ethnographic Museum “Oliva Carta Cannas” and the Museum of Banditry, the first is dedicated to the exhibition of typical objects and furnishings linked to the domestic environment, to the world of weaving and everyday life, the second collects documents and artifacts relating to the outlaws persecuted during the Piedmontese domination because of their smuggling activities. Also evocative and original is the Museum of Lost Love, a collection of thoughts and wishes written on slips of paper by visitors and hung with simple clothespins from wires running overhead. Another unmissable stop, also created by Mario Saragato, the same inventor of the museum inspired by De Andrè's song, is the Doodle. Go and be amazed!
Aggius is, however, an open-air museum.. Its views, its narrow streets and small squares, the objects and ornaments that can be seen while walking through the village, make Aggius a precious jewel of Gallura. For this reason it was decided to give shape to this natural art with the creation of the AAAperto Museum of Contemporary Art.
To visit it, you can easily follow three parallel routes simultaneously, starting from Piazza Alvinu and heading into the historic centre:
– Being is weaving by Maria Lai
– Where there's a thread, there's a trace (photography)
– Contemporary art
AAAperto's goal is a harmonious and shared growth with Italian and international artists. Here, they can find inspiration and a place for their creativity, but also active participation from the entire community and visitors, who are an inspiration and resource for the village's sustainable development.
Finally we stop at The Father Tree, the carpet weaving workshop where Rita Gabriella Lutzu will make you witness the ancient and ever-present techniques of production of the typical Aggius carpets.
