Cala Grande, an iconic place

For half a century, Moon Valley was the Last Hippy Paradise.

Hidden on the western side of Capo Testa, Cala Grande it is the place that became famous for decades with the name of Valley of the Moon. It is one of the most unique environments in Gallura: a large granite valley that slopes down to the sea, enclosed between gigantic boulders eroded by the wind, natural caves, tafoni, and low vegetation shaped by the mistral wind.

It can be reached on foot via the Capo Testa trails. Once you leave the road behind, the landscape changes rapidly and the walk enters an increasingly wild environment. The trail passes through Mediterranean scrub and granite formations until it opens onto the valley and small coves facing west. There's no need to rush: part of the charm lies in losing yourself in the natural passages, bizarrely shaped rocks, and sudden glimpses of the sea.

Cala Grande also preserves the memory of the alternative community that, starting from the 1960s and 1970s, contributed to making the "“Valley of the Moon”" Today the geographical name to be favored is Cala Grande, while Valle della Luna remains part of the history and imagination of the place.

It is a particularly suggestive walk in the late afternoon and towards sunset, when the granite takes on warm tones and the view opens onto the western sea.

Advise: wear suitable footwear, bring water and follow existing paths, avoiding improvised passages between rocks.
