Sardinia ranks first nationally for non-hotel accommodation capacity
non-hotel accommodation and overtourism - focus on Sardinia
Non-hotel tourism has become a significant phenomenon nationwide, necessitating a series of ministerial measures and regulations.
Among the latest is the introduction of the CIN (National Identification Code) This has allowed for better monitoring of short-term rental tourism, increasing transparency, security, and traceability. It has also helped combat tax evasion and illegal activity, making the market safer and standardizing data management nationwide with the creation of a single national database of all tourist properties.
The non-hotel sector in Sardinia currently represents one of the main sources of income in the tourism sector thanks to the over 200,000 beds available, almost double the number of places offered by traditional hotels which do not exceed 120,000. In 2024 the 50 coastal municipalities of the island have generated in the non-hotel sector, thanks also to the introduction of the CIN, a turnover of approximately 600 million euros, with an increase of 32% compared to the previous year.
The boom of this phenomenon is mainly due to the advent of OTAs, digital platforms that have monopolized the tourism market, unfortunately emptying it of its territorial and emotional identity but guaranteeing, even for small businesses with low or very low reception capacity, a presence and visibility on the web with a consequent economic return.
